I am thrilled to be offering this brand new workshop in mixed media immersion. A paradox is described as a situation, person, or thing that combines contradictory features or qualities. When looking at these little pieces of art, I am wondering how all these seemingly disconnected images, brush strokes and collage elements all come together to create a cohesive piece?
If you’re anything like me, and you collect bits and pieces of ephemera and collage, then this workshop is going to rock your world. Together we will discover how to combine and choose which pieces go where to tell the untold story buried in the latency of the layers.

I am so excited to introduce this workshop as an In Real Life (IRL) workshop at Upwards Art Studio in Owen Sound.

$159+hst (supplies extra) BONUS: includes a little gift bag of ephemera from Christina's personal stash.

Saturday, January 21 2023,  10-4pm (Storm date: Sunday Jan.22)

What to bring? Here is the basic list of the supplies we will be using. Please bring what you have and remember that we are guests at a beautiful new art supply store that will have everything you need, and more to purchase!

Supply list;

  1. Panels  or canvas (I recommend working small so you can do as many as time allows for and to respect the space allotment of a shared classroom space).  My two samples, completed in one day, are 7”x7” canvases.  Use wood panels if encaustic will be a possible layer in your work.
  2. Wallpaper paste or a cellulose or rice based glue/adhesive. Please don’t use an acrylic based glue unless you don’t want encaustic as an element.
  3. Paints: I generally limit my palette so I don’t get too crazy with my colour choices at the workshop. Use chalk paints and clay paints if encaustic is desired as a layer. Acrylics are fine if working on canvas without encaustic. Upwards sells tiny cans of chalk paint in the most beautiful palette.
  4. Collage elements; papers, images, fabrics, ephemera, driftwood, tiny pebbles, string, ribbons, …
  5. Finishing options; For canvas, I recommend a glossy, thick topcoat and chalk paint clear wax (faux encaustic).  For encaustic, you will need to bring a small dish or clear encaustic with a brush for your own personal use. Please, nothing larger than a tuna can. Upwards will have a small tin of encaustic available for purchase ready to go.
  6. Tools; brushes for your chalk paints and adhesives (synthetic bristles are recommended). One brush for your encaustic, natural bristle brush required, mark making tools, stamps, pens, pencils etc…
  7. The studio is equipped with non-disposable items such as water buckets, scissors and palettes. Please bring a few paper towels and baby wipes for your personal use.

Please note that it is both impossible and impractical  to bring everything you can only anticipate using.  Please respect the fact that we are in a shared classroom space and that your bag of goodies will need to fit under your table at your leg space only. We have the privilege of being in such a well-stocked store that this should make it easy to pack.

Any and all questions about the workshop should be addressed to Amelia at Upwards Art Studio.
